Machine Quilting Unlimited Pass it on Challenge

Window on Ironton

Thirteen artists were invited to participate in a challenge called Pass it On, which was done much like the children’s game of “Telephone”, and sponsored by  Machine Quilting Unlimited. We had two teams of six fabric artists each. The two team leaders, Vicki Anderson and I, each made an art quilt inspired by a photograph by a talented friend of my son Alex, Aaron Angert. (Vicki Anderson is the CEO & Publisher of MQU and I am the Managing Editor.) Aaron’s photo featured a window with a view to the inside of a delapidated building in Ironton, a Colorado ghost town, and through to the outside again. The roof was missing and and the walls were falling down. Window on Ironton is my quilt, inspired directly by Aaron’s photo. The next person on my team made a quilt inspired by my quilt, without being able to see the original photo, and so on until all six quilts on each team were completed.

The quilt inspired by my Window on Ironton was by Julie Hallquist:

Room With a View

It was amazing to see how far the quilts had traveled from the original photo by the time the sixth artist in each group completed her quilt. In fact, each team too a different route as well.  See the wasps’ nest in the upper center of Window on Ironton?  For awhile Vicki’s team went seriously off on wasps!

The entire Pass it on Challenge is featured in the September 2010 issue of Machine Quilting Unlimited:

In addition to Aaron Angert, Vicki Anderson and myself, the artists who participated are Julie Hallquist, Nora Jones, Aynie Hanna, Maxine Carlstedt, Vicki Carlson, Kay Jones, Stephanie Patterson, Janet Pugh, Denise Labadie and Claudia Martin. The Challenge has been exhibited at the Milwaukee Machine Quilting Show and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival in August, 2010, and will also be traveling to the Firehouse Art Gallery in Longmont, CO, HMQS in Salt Lake City and the Denver National Quilt Festival in 2011.

In the late summer, we had a reception to celebrate the completion and the send off of the challenge at my home in Fort Collins, CO.  This is a sampling of pictures from that incredibly fun get together.  Lots of great food, good wine and excellent company!!
