Reina’s quilt
This is my first real post on my blog, I guess I’ll see if it works! Reina is my nephew Schuyler’s baby girl, born on June 18th, 2007. Her mother, Amy, is of Japanese descent, so I tried to make a quilt with somewhat of an Oriental look, without actually using any Japanese fabrics. The circles are made from my own hand-painted fabric, out of drapery lining fabric. I am really liking the look this fabric creates, especially for landscapes.

This is such a nice and different baby quilt - I like the fabrics you used! I love the butterfly motif you have quilted in the circles, I am sure they will love it!

OK, I guess this is how you leave comments. I LOVE the quilt and I will bet your nephew and niece-in-law will as well. And now you can post to the blog and I know how to answer

It’s wonderful. You have definitely captured the Japanese aesthetic here. They’re going to love it (both parents and, once older, child).

Lovely quilt, Kit! Elegant and yes, Asian in feel. Not a cutesy baby quilt but one that can be enjoyed by adults because of its beauty and elegance and by children because of it’s simplicity and the stitched butterflies. Well done!

Congratulations on your first post to your blog. I still have that goal ahead of me.
I like the way the circles seem to float across the surface of the quilt. I assume the drapery lining you used is not the kind with the waterproof coating.

Judith, actually the drapery lining does have the waterproof coating. I washed it before I painted it, and the paint looks very different than when it is on pfd cotton fabric. It kind of glows, and travels in a more thread by thread way.

Kit, the quilt is perfect — very oriental in feel but appropriate for a baby as well. I really like the picture heading on your blog — turned out quite well. You’re making progress…YAY!!!

Beautiful! Nice Asian feeling. She’s going to love it, such a nice blending of cultures.
